Travel to Madison
Situated in the southern part of Wisconsin State, to the west of Lake Michigan, Madison is famous for its outdoor recreation, natural beauty, cultural attractions and distinctive shops and restaurants. It is also Wisconsins lively capital city. Additionally, the city houses one of the biggest American universities, the University of Wisconsin. There is also an international airport in Madison; however, the only incoming international flights are from Canada. The facility also offers daily domestic direct flights to La Crosse, Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Chicago and Stevens Point.
Transportation to Madison
The citys Dane County Regional-Truax Field Airport is situated to the north of Madison and provides direct flights to and from the cities of Stevens Point, Chicago, Milwaukee, Minneapolis and La Crosse as well as international services from destinations in Canada. Madison is linked by train to Minneapolis/St Paul, Milwaukee and Chicago. Greyhound buses follow routes to and from destinations across the United States, via Milwaukee.
By car, Madison is connected by the east-west I-94, which starts in Milwaukee and terminates near Billings before joining with I-90, which also leads east-west to the south of Madison. Interstate 35 follows its way from Duluth, through Madison, and farther south to the border with Mexico.
What to see
One of the most popular tourist attractions in the state is the Wisconsin Dells. Approximately an hours drive west of the capital, just off of I-94, this gorgeous area has been converted into one of the United States largest amusement areas, which also features one of the worlds finest water parks. Also on offer here are some outstanding outdoor activities such as staying in a log cabin, canoeing, horseback riding, camping and much more.
The city of Madison is positioned in the middle of two wonderful lakes, Mendota (west) and Monona (east), and one of the citys star attractions is the masterpiece, Monona Terrace, which overlooks the lake of the same name. It was local architect Frank Lloyd Wrights last project. State Street is Madisons most interesting thoroughfare, which runs all the way to the large University of Madison and is lined with a variety of good boutiques, pubs, coffee shops and restaurants.
Within Madisons limits you can find five lakes and more than 200 parks offering a comprehensive selection of year-round outdoor activities, from cycling, hiking, sailing and swimming to ice fishing, snow sailing and cross-country skiing.
Daytrips
Idyllic towns and a scenic countryside surround Madison, and positioned just an hours drive to the east is the states most significant city, Milwaukee. Home to the renowned Miller Brewing Company and a wonderfully renovated waterfront area, this friendly city is a great spot to sample a beverage or two. The excellent Dells area, on I-94 north of Madison, includes a spectacular water and amusement area, with good options for outdoor enthusiasts.
Activities and leisure
Madison and the surrounding area boast an abundance of activity and leisure options. The citys most interesting thoroughfare, State Street, is an ideal place for those who love to shop or who are simply looking to enjoy a good meal or drink at one of the many pubs and restaurants here. Outdoor enthusiasts should not miss the Dells area as it is here that you can find an extremely large amusement area and an outstanding water park. Activities available here include: ice fishing, biking, sailing, swimming, cross-country skiing and snow sailing. In addition, situated within the city limits there are more than 200 parks and five lovely lakes.
Safety issues
Driving in unknown areas places you at a higher risk of having an accident, particularly on long voyages without frequent breaks, and the majority of the water-based activities also pose potential dangers. Pickpockets are active in the city centres of Madison and Milwaukee, so remain attentive. We highly recommend that you arrange travel insurance for you and your family before you commence your travels.
