Louisville has a colourful history that includes Native Americans, Europeans and the British all playing a part. In 1778, Colonel George Rogers Clark founded the first settlement in the area of todays modern Louisville, during a campaign against the British. Since then, Louisville has continued to grow, and today, it is a popular holiday destination for many travellers.

Transportation to Louisville

There are several Interstate highways and roads linking Louisville to many major cities and towns in the United States, making it very easy to self-drive or take a coach to get here. Louisville also has its own international airport that handles more than three million passengers each year and numerous flights from both international and domestic destinations.

What to see

Louisville, a wonderful combination of old town charm and urban sophistication, offers plenty for visitors to do and see including visiting the famous Louisville Slugger Museum; the unparalleled Kentucky Derby; the Kentucky Derby Museum, which is the only museum in the world of its kind; the Louisville Zoo; and for thrill-seekers, Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom.

Daytrips

Interesting daytrip sites include visiting history-rich Frankfort, the capital city of Kentucky. There are numerous landmarks here, in particular the Old State Capital, historic sites, museums and old buildings to enjoy, not mentioning the fantastic shopping opportunities.

The Forest Discover Center showcases the wonderful world of forests. It has an indoor forest of more than a 1,000 square feet and a working sawmill to explore. The Labrot and Graham Distillery, one of the oldest distilleries in the region, is famous for its Bourbon whiskey which was distilled here in 1812.

Activities and leisure

Louisville is a busy city, but it also offers many leisure activities for rejuvenating and relaxing. At Cherokee Park, there are opportunities for fishing, horseback riding, softball, tennis, basketball, golf, cycling, jogging and picnicking amid beautiful scenery, especially during spring when the wildflowers are in bloom.

EP Tom Sawyer State Park offers visitors an opportunity to exercise at its facilities which include a gym, indoor courts, weight room, Olympic-sized pool, fitness and nature trails, soccer and softball fields, tennis courts and a BMX track. Visitors can also relax by taking an arts and crafts class or having a picnic in this beautifully scenic area.

Safety issues

Louisville is a safe place to visit. However, just like any other big city, there are some cases of petty crime including pick-pocketing and bag-snatching. Try not to attract attention to yourself by carrying valuables or wearing expensive jewellery.
