Getting to Louisville

Louisville is one of the easiest cities to get to in the United States, as it has excellent road links and an international airport that receives flights from many parts of the world as well as from within the United States.

Once in Louisville, getting from place to place is not a problem, as the city has a good public transportation system that includes buses and trolleys. Naturally, taxis are always available.

By car

Interstates 64 and 65 pass through Louisville, while I-71 begins in Louisville. All three highways are well signposted, in excellent condition and link the city to other major cities and towns in the United States.

The citys road system is typical of road systems found elsewhere in the United States, with roads arranged in grids and alternating one-way streets. The system makes it easy to drive around and there is little chance of getting lost.

By bus

Many bus operators provide services to Louisville, but the main operator is Greyhound. Greyhound connects Louisville to Cincinnati in 2 hours; to Nashville in 3 hours; and to Chicago in 6 hours.

City buses operate extensively in Louisville, connecting all parts of downtown Louisville and Jefferson County, the Kentucky suburbs in Oldham County, Bullitt County and the Indiana suburbs of Jeffersonville, Clarksville and New Albany.

City buses also operate throughout the downtown hotel and shopping districts. The shopping district is also served by the Toonerville II Trolley. Some bus routes operate from 05:00 to 02:00 the next morning, while trolleys services run from 07:30 to 18:00.

By air

The Louisville International Airport is only six miles from downtown, making it very convenient to get from airport to the city. Taxis wait outside the Arrivals Hall and passengers can also choose to use the complimentary shuttle buses that many hotels provide. There is also a bus service to the city centre that runs at regular intervals throughout the day.

Facilities at the airport include ATMs, shops, cafs, car rental services and restaurants in the terminal. The Departure Terminal has a business centre that offers internet, fax and photocopy services. The airport provides good facilities for disabled passengers. Long-term and short-term parking are available and there is also the option of economy parking, which is located some distance away from the terminals, but is connected to the terminal by a free shuttle bus service.

Taxis

Taxi services are easily available all around and in Louisville. Visitors can also opt to pre-book taxis if they desire. All taxis are metered and the drivers know the nooks and crannies of the city. Taxis can usually provide passengers with receipts, and in many taxis, it is also possible to pay using a credit card.
