In a city as large and sprawling as Los Angeles, location is everything. Make sure you take some time to plan your trip and find accommodation which is conveniently placed. Hiring a car is usually essential as attractions are spread out, so allow for parking costs when calculating your hotel rate. Smokers should note that lighting up in a public room is against state law and few rooms are set aside for smokers. Finding a place to stay in LA is easy; however, finding somewhere inexpensive and well-located is much more difficult.

Where to stay

Tourism is a major industry in Los Angeles and there is no shortage of accommodation to suit all budgets. The district you stay in can make or break your visit, so select carefully. If you are a business traveller then the choice is easy; book a hotel near your place of work. If you are on holiday then decide on the attractions that you would like to visit and then choose somewhere close to where you will be spending most of your time.

The beach areas such as Hermosa, Santa Monica and Venice are understandably popular with visitors. The weather here is cooler than inland and the beaches are generally free from smog. Make sure you book well-ahead during the summer as places fill up quickly. Public transport is more limited around the beach towns, so hiring a car is almost essential.

If you are arranging a family holiday and plan on visiting any of the theme parks then consider staying at Universal City, for Universal Studios, or Anaheim, for Disneyland. Pasadena is another option as it has a small-town atmosphere, historic buildings and easy access to downtown LA.

Downtown hotels are geared towards business travellers and the area is dead at night. It does benefit from reasonable public transport, with the Metro connecting with key areas such as Hollywood and Universal Studios. You'll also find that there are some good weekend packages on offer in this part of the city.

Hollywood is a good place from which you can do a lot of exploring and it has a wide selection of moderately priced hotels and motels. A lot of time and money has been spent rejuvenating the area, and it is considered to be safer and more attractive than it was a few years ago. West Hollywood in particular is a livelier area than downtown, with plenty of restaurants and nightlife. If money isn't a consideration then some of the finest hotels are in Beverly Hills and Century City.
