Be Safe in Los Angeles

Crime has always been a problem in Los Angeles, although figures show that the situation is slowly improving.

Safety

Most areas of the city are safe to walk around during the daytime, but it's best to avoid South Central, MacArthur Park, East LA and some sections of Hollywood. These areas are known for gang-land activity and drug dealers. Downtown is fine during the day, but is deserted after the sun goes down, except for the small army of homeless people.

Venice is another area that is safe during the day but has a reputation for being dangerous at night. Westwood and Beverly Hills are two of the safer city districts and most of the beach towns such as Hermosa are relatively trouble-free. Staff at your hotel should be able to advise you if you are unsure which neighbourhoods are safe.

Always be aware of your surroundings and try to avoid dimly lit streets at night. Avoid public parks at night unless there's a concert or event being held. Don't carry large amounts of money or display jewellery and use ATMs that are located in busy areas. Also, remember to leave your valuables in the hotel safe and not in your room. If you are driving, keep your car doors locked and place your valuables out of sight. Don't open your window or door if anyone approaches your car.

Health

Travel insurance is essential if you are visiting America as medical costs are extremely high. Los Angeles has two of the best hospitals in the country; the Cedar Sinai and UCLA medical centres. If you do need any treatment, make sure you keep receipts for later claims.

Food hygiene standards in restaurants are high and closely monitored, so food poisoning should not be a significant concern for most travellers. Infectious diseases are uncommon and there are no special vaccinations required.
