Los Angeles Transport
Although Los Angeles has a fairly comprehensive public transport system, transport here can be slow and frustrating. The car is undoubtedly the most popular way of getting around, but traffic can be horrendous and the road system is difficult to navigate for first-time visitors.
By bus
The bus network is fairly comprehensive but the bus stops can be spread out and if you travel any distance you will find yourself having to make frequent transfers. Buses are best used when you have a short or occasional journey. Buses between downtown and the coast run approximately every 15 minutes between 05:00 and 02:00. Taking buses late at night is not recommended.
Some of the main services include Metro, which covers most of the city; Big Blue Bus, which operates around the West LA area and Westside; and DASH, which serves local communities as well as Hollywood and downtown.
Taxis
You will find it difficult to hail a taxi in most parts of the city. There are designated taxi ranks at the airport and various locations in downtown and the major hotels. For other locations, taxis must be telephoned for and booked in advance. Ask at your hotel for details of a reliable taxi company.
By train
The troubled Metrorail train system was originally planned to cover the whole of Los Angeles County, but is currently made up of just four lines spanning 60 miles with 62 stations. The Green Line goes from Hawthorne to Norwalk along the Century Freeway. The Blue Line connects downtown Los Angeles and Long Beach. The Red Line connects Union Station, downtown LA, Hollywood, Universal City and North Hollywood, and the Gold Line operates from Union Station to Pasadena.
A monthly, weekly or Metro Day Pass can be purchased for unlimited rides on Metro Rail or Metro Bus services. You can also buy 10 Metro tokens which can be used for one-way fares on either system.
Tourist services
The Go Los Angeles Card is a multi-attraction pass that gives you entry to over 35 attractions in the city. You can visit as many attractions as you want on each day (bear in mind that attractions can be very spread out and journey times are long). You can also save up to 50 per cent on entertainment and dining. The card can be purchased from the main office at 6773 Hollywood Boulevard or from various travel agencies.
From the airport
There are numerous bus services connecting the airport to the city and beach resorts. Options include shuttle buses, public bus, taxi or limousine. Car hire companies are also on hand and you can book online to ensure a vehicle.
