Be Safe in Las Vegas

Despite the advertising slogan ‘What Happens Here, Stays Here’, Las Vegas has laws that are enforced, as in any other American city. Drunk driving and illicit drugs are not tolerated, and will result in arrest. Given all the gambling and its lure of easy money, Las Vegas attracts a small unsavory element.

Safety

Major casinos are generally very safe; casinos take security seriously and have security cameras as well as uniformed and plainclothes security personnel roaming at all times. Be vigilant and don’t leave any valuables visible in your car. If you are lucky enough to win a large jackpot, you can ask the casino to hold your winnings in its safe, or to pay you with a cheque, to avoid carrying a large amount of money. If you insist on your winnings in cash, all casinos have security personnel that can escort you to your car or your room upon request.

Also, remain vigilant while driving. Las Vegas Boulevard is notorious for fender benders and other collisions, due the amount of stop-and-go traffic and the numerous venue distractions on offer. Cross the Las Vegas Strip only at designated pedestrian crosswalks; the crosswalks and overhead pedestrian bridges make life easier for pedestrians and drivers trying to navigate one of the busiest streets in the country.

Health

While there are no specific health risks associated with travel within the US, bear in mind that besides the hectic and aggressive driving in Las Vegas, many people also drive whilst intoxicated. Nevada has an unusually high frequency of traffic fatalities involving alcohol, and most of these accidents happen in or near Las Vegas.

Like just about everywhere in the US, medical facilities are top rate but expensive, and treatment can be refused without evidence of insurance or proof of funds. For tourists to Las Vegas, good travel insurance with medical cover is highly recommended.
