This magical holiday destination, located on Big Island in Hawaii, offers a wonderful combination of rich history along with stories of powerful priests and island kings with fantastic weather that allows for numerous outdoor activities. Many Americans, Japanese and Australians as well as visitors from other parts of the world flock here during the year to take in the tranquillity and beauty of Kona.
Transportation to Kona
There are really only two practical methods of transportation to get to Kona: by air and by ship. Kona has an international airport that caters efficiently to tourists, and it handles flights from many parts of the USA and some international destinations. International passengers may have to catch a connecting flight to Kona from a city on mainland USA. Although there is a port here, it caters to cruises and there are no regular boat services between the islands and mainland USA.
What to see
Kona offers plenty for tourists to see and do because of its wonderful climate which encourages all sorts of outdoor activities. There are many places of historical value to visit at Kona including the Mokuaikaua Church, the Painted Church and the revered site of Pu'uhonua O Honaunau. Other interesting places to visit are the delightful Sea Horse Farm; the Mauna Kea Visitor Center, which offers many interactive displays; and the Hulihee Palace, where almost every monarch of the island has stayed at.
Daytrips
From Kona, it is possible to visit many interesting national parks and surrounding sites. The surrounding areas are spectacularly beautiful and nature lovers will enjoy identifying wildlife and the many varieties of flora and fauna that can be found here. There are also some excellent beaches and swimming spots outside of Kona. A daytrip to Volcano's National Park should be on your agenda, although it is situated slightly more than 2 hours drive away.
Activities and leisure
Favourite activities here are water-based and include diving, snorkelling, waterskiing, paragliding and fishing. However, there are also some lovely walking trails and paths, golf courses and other activities including horseback riding to enjoy.

Kona is a safe place to visit, but tourists are reminded to be careful and responsible for their belongings. It is always best to travel with a comprehensive travel insurance policy as this will provide you with peace of mind.
