Getting to Kona

Kona is located on Big Island, Hawaii and the most convenient way for visitors to get here is to fly.

By bus

Once on the island, it is possible to get to Kona via bus. Big Island has a bus service that covers many areas that are of interest to tourists. Free services are provided around the island, but there are some restrictions as to what can be taken aboard the bus: boogie and surf boards are not allowed and passengers may have to pay to take luggage and bicycles aboard.

By air

The Kona International Airport is conveniently located close to downtown Kailua-Kona. The busy airport handles international, domestic and charter flights as well as air taxis.

Facilities at the island airport include public parking and rental car check-in facilities and a few cafs and shops. There are also some money exchange facilities at the airport as well as ATMs and an information booth.

Airlines flying directly to the airport include Aloha Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, American Airlines and United Airlines. There are direct flights from San Francisco, Oakland, Los Angeles and Orange County to Kona. The airport services one Japan Airlines international flight each day. Passengers normally fly into Honolulu Airport, from where you can catch a connecting flight to Kona.

By ferry

Kona has a port that handles cruise ships, but there are no regularly-scheduled ferry or boat transportations to or from any of the other Hawaiian islands.

Taxis

Taxis are available on the island and can be waved down on the streets. All taxis are metered and drivers are friendly and polite.
