Getting to Knoxville
Situated in the state of Tennessee, Knoxville is fairly easy to get to, as there are good roads leading to the city. Additionally, it also has its own airport, making it easy for tourists from all over the globe to make their way to Knoxville without too much trouble.
By car
Driving to Knoxville is a great way of getting to the city, as there are many interesting sites to visit along the way. However, distances in the US are vast and driving times can be long. Driving is also on the left hand side of the road, which can be confusing for those used to driving on the right hand side. Roads are almost always in excellent condition and are clearly signposted. Interstates 40 and 75 connect in Knoxville.
By bus
There are several long distance bus operators, including Greyhound, that commute from major cities all over the states to Knoxville. The buses are very comfortable and there are regular breaks for snacks and changes of driver, as distances can be very long. The main bus terminal in Knoxville is located at Magnolia Avenue.
Once in Knoxville, commuting is easy to do by bus. Buses are currently operated by Knoxville Area Transit (KAT), which provide fixed-route bus services on 25 routes throughout the city of Knoxville and sections of Knox County. KAT's hours of operation (including Night Rider/Sunday Rider services) are from 05:30 until 00:30, from Monday to Friday. Saturday services begin at 06:30 and end at 00:30, and Sunday services are from 11:00 to 19:00.
By air
The McGhee Tyson Airport is located less than 15 miles from the city, making it very convenient for passengers to get downtown. The busy airport handles more than 100 flights a day and is open 24 hours. Flights from almost all of the major cities in America land here either daily or weekly (more frequently during the week). The airport is served by six regional and three major carriers.
Airport facilities include a good range of dining outlets, an information counter and shopping and banking facilities including ATMs and foreign exchange services. The airport also has a fully-equipped modern business centre and wireless internet services are available throughout the terminals. The airport has extensive and user-friendly services and facilities for disabled passengers.
It is very easy to get from the airport to Knoxville downtown area as there are numerous local buses and commercial and courtesy shuttles operating from the airport. There are also numerous car rental services available for those who wish to self-drive. Taxi and limousine services are also available.
By trolley
Knoxville has its own downtown free trolley service. The trolley stops at many attractions within the downtown area, making it very convenient for visitors to use. It also connects with the citys regular bus service. Trolleys generally operate from Monday to Friday between 07:00 to 18:00.
Taxis
Several taxi operators provide taxi services throughout Knoxville and neighbouring areas. Taxis can be hailed at taxi stops, designated areas or pre-booked by telephone. Services are reliable and metered.
