Getting to Key West

Visitors destined for Key West can choose from a range of options for getting there, with arriving by air the most popular option for those coming from abroad. Key West International Airport receives flights from domestic destinations and the Bahamas only. Most international flights are routed through Miami International Airport. The road network is well developed, making driving by private or hire car a good option and also providing good conditions for coach services coming from North American cities. Amtrak offers rail services to Miami. From Miami, take the Keys Shuttle.

By car

From Miami International Airport, take Le Jeune Road (Northwest 42nd Ave) to Route 836 west. Take the Homestead Extension of Florida's Turnpike south (toll road), which ends at Florida City and connects to U.S. 1. Carry on south on US 1. When inward bound for Key West, remain in the far-right lane onto North Roosevelt Boulevard, which turns into Truman Avenue in Old Town.

By rail

By bus

Key West is connected to the extensive Greyhound coach network, serving most major US destinations. The journey time from Miami to Key West is about 4 hours, 30 minutes. There is always a big demand for seats so book early.

By ferry

Finally, theres a ferry that sails from Miami (from downtowns Sealine Marina) to Key West. Fast Cats PurrSeavearance is a luxury, 102-foot catamaran, which can hold up to 149 passengers and makes the 4 hour, 30 minute journey 4 times a week. VIP tickets are available and include preferential seating. Food and alcoholic beverages are on sale but not included in the price. Tours leave Miami Thursday through Sunday at 07:30 and depart from Key West on Sundays at 17:30.

By air

Key West International Airport is located four miles from the Southernmost Point landmark in the Old Town and is a modern facility offering daily scheduled flights to and from a large number of US destinations as well as the Bahamas. Transit options to town are limited and visitors should plan accordingly. Shuttle buses are available and taxis are on hand, as are car hire companies. The airport offers limited passenger facilities, including a currency exchange, fast-food outlets and vending machines.

Key West International Airport

The Key West International Airport serves travellers from all over the world. Also known as EYW, the airport is located on the Northeast end of the island of Key West, just minutes from many Key West accommodation options, attractions and downtown Key West. Flights operate daily to around 10 domestic destinations, including Miami and Fort Lauderdale, as well as Nassau in the Bahamas.

Key West airport transportation

Shuttle buses are provided and are run by Greyhound Lines, Keys Shuttle Buses and Super Shuttle. Offering regular services throughout the day, these shuttle buses travel to all areas of the Florida Keys, including central Key West and Key Largo. Taxis are abundant and the central taxi rank is located outside of the airports terminal building. Operated by Florida Keys Taxi Dispatch, airport taxis provide a convenient and speedy means for travel into downtown Key West. For those who choose to rent a car, the airport offers good connections to the areas major roads, including South Roosevelt Boulevard, North Roosevelt Boulevard and Truman Avenue. TransFloridian provides economical scheduled daily service from Miami International Airport to a number of destinations in the Florida Keys, including Islamorada, Key Largo, Marathon and Key West. Seats onboard these motor coaches are comparable to airline style Business Class seating and offer full amenities, including onboard meal and beverage services.
