Local cuisine

When most people think of Kansas City, barbecue comes to mind. Dating back to the 19th century, the legacy of the Kansas City barbecue began when Henry Perry, the Father of Kansas City BBQ - started selling his tasty fare out of an old railroad car near the famous corner of 18th & Vine. Cooked low and slow, Kansas City is the only place for a genuine BBQ feast.

Where to eat

Kansas City, as the heart of the Midwest, prides itself on great barbeque, which explains all the great steakhouses in the area. Carnivores who like their meat spicy and smothered in rich sauces should try Arthur Bryants BBQ on Brooklyn Ave, a restaurant that provides old-fashioned grilled meats, but goes easy on the wallet. Great comfort food can be found at the Corner Caf, where the staff is friendly and the portions are extremely generous. Hardees, though a chain restaurant, also serves heaping country breakfasts, freshly made biscuits and excellent burgers. The Barleys Brewhaus offers fresh soups and salads, steak, seafood and home-made sausages.

All this is not to say that Kansas City doesnt have more cosmopolitan dining options. In fact, the citys 39th Street is known as Restaurant Row for its great selection of Asian and Italian restaurants, interspersed with small boutiques to give the area a bohemian feel. Bo Ling, which is owned by a local family and has three locations in the metropolitan area, is a great place to go for dim sum on the weekends. For sushi, there is the Kabuki Japanese Restaurant, located in the Crown Center. It also serves sashimi, sukiyaki, shabu-shabu, udon and tempura dishes.
