Travel to Jacksonville

The third most populous city in the state, Jacksonville is one of the largest cities in Florida and the county seat of Duval County. The city offers an eclectic mix of museums, beaches, fine restaurants and fascinating heritage, making it the ideal holiday destination for those looking for a trip with a mix of activities.

Neighbouring St Augustine, can be reached in under 30 minutes and offers it's own array of attractions, providing additional reasons for visiting Jacksonville, especially if you have plans to rent a car and explore the area.

Transportation to Jacksonville

Jacksonville International Airport is the chief gateway by which most international visitors arrive at the city and it is a busy facility handling some 200 arrivals and departures per day. If a direct flight from your home city is not available, then its possible to fly into another major Florida airport and then take a connecting flight.

Road options are also available for reaching Jacksonville, providing domestic visitors with an easy means of reaching the city. Greyhound buses travel from a variety of major US cities, while major highways provide easy access for those with private or rental vehicles.

What to see

The city is set by the sea so theres no shortage of fine coastal scenery to check out, and after youre done with that, there are landmarks such as the Castillo de San Marcos Fort, Fort Caroline National Memorial, Fort Matanzas National Monument and the Veterans Memorial Wall. Museums are plentiful and among the highlights are facilities such as the Museum of Science and History, Museum of Weapons and Early American History and the Museum of Modern Art.

Daytrips

For daytrips, nearby Gainesville has its own selection of attractions such as the Gainesville Raceway with its exciting drag racing events, the scenic Kanapaha Botanical Gardens, the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Historic State Park and the Florida Museum of Natural History. St Augustine, which is similarly close to Jacksonville, also has a variety of attractions on offer. Both cities can be reached by hire car or private vehicle in less than 30 minutes.

Activities and leisure

The beach offers an abundance of opportunities to get active, with water sports such as surfing, windsurfing, waterskiing, jet-skiing, snorkelling and sailing available; while back on the sand, holidaymakers can enjoy a game of Frisbee or beach volleyball. Away from the beach, there are parks offering a variety of leisure pursuits and golf courses for those who feel like practising their swing.

Safety issues

Safety issues are of low concern for visitors to Jacksonville, with most holidaymakers enjoying trips entirely free of any unfortunate incidents. Sensible behaviour, however, can play a big part in ensuring that your holiday is incident-free and this is applicable to both health issues and issues relating to the safety of yourself, your cash and valuable items.

If you take out comprehensive travel insurance prior to leaving your home country, you can enjoy your holiday with some peace of mind.
