Indianapolis Weather

Indianapolis experiences a continental climate that sees hot summers with plenty of humidity and long cold winters. In common with most Midwestern cities, Indianapolis experiences four quite distinct seasons, by far the rainiest of which is the summer.

Like most cities in the Midwest, it has four distinct seasons. Summers are hot and humid, with average high temperatures approaching 90 degrees. 100-degree temperature days are not unheard of. Spring and autumn are usually pleasant, with temperatures reaching around 18 C / 65 F. Winters can be long and cold, with daily highs barely inching above freezing. Temperatures can fall into negative digits. The rainiest months are in the summer, with average rainfalls of over four inches per month, but these averages fluctuate only slightly throughout the year.

Summer

Average temperatures during the summer season (June to August) are in the 90s (F) with high levels of humidity; daily highs of 100 plus degrees (Fahrenheit) are not altogether uncommon. Precipitation is greatest during the month of July with averages of 4.5 inches. Provided you are accustomed to the heat, the summer season is not a bad time to visit Indianapolis otherwise you might prefer the months of May and September when things are a little cooler and rainfall is less significant.

Winter

Winters are exceedingly cold affairs and its not uncommon for temperatures to fall into negative digits and daily highs to barely make it above freezing. The volume of rainfall is greatest in November and December and least in January and February. Unless you are well accustomed to cold climates, winter is not the best time to take a holiday in Indianapolis.
