The citys variety of motor racing events combined with a number of local sporting teams provides visitors with ample opportunity to sit back, relax and enjoy some sport in a spectator capacity while some fantastic local parks, public golf courses and hotel fitness centres, offer the chance to get active.

Spectator sports

The Indianapolis Speedway hosts popular spectator events throughout the year with the Indy 500 standing out as the highlight of the racing calendar. Baseball fans can catch the games of the Indianapolis Indians at the Victory Field stadium located downtown. For basketball fans, the Indiana Pacers play at the Conseco Fieldhouse while for football fans, games of the Indianapolis Colts can be caught at the same venue.

Participant sports

Indianapolis has a good selection of parks where visitors can head for some outdoor activity. White River State Park for example, is located in the downtown area and offers vast expanses of greenery where the pursuit of all manner of leisure or sporting activities is possible. Biking and rollerblading are among the more popular pursuits on offer, while the parks canal offers pedal boats or gondolas with private gondoliers for hire. Other parks offering opportunities for outdoor activity and relaxation include Riverside, Garfield and Eagle Creek. For golf fans, the city has a large number of public golf courses with 9, 18 and 36 holes available. In the first category, theres the Dakota Landing Golf Club and the Douglas Golf Course; in the second category, theres the Coffin Golf Club and the Smock Golf Course and in the final category, theres the Pines Course and the Sycamore Course. Many reputable hotels in the city have their own fitness centres which are free for the use of guests.
