Getting to Indianapolis

Indianapolis is reached relatively easily and is served by a variety of transportation means. Most international passengers will arrive at the city via Indianapolis International Airport although many may do so via transfers from other US airports. The road offers options for both car renters and bus users while the AMTRAK train service maintains connections with a large number of US destinations.

By car

Indianapolis is reached easily by car on account of being served by several major interstates. Access to the city is available from I-69, I-70, I-74, I-65 and I-465. Driving conditions within the city are good; however, all visitors should be aware that the local police force are especially stringent with regards to the enforcement of the driving speed limits and anyone caught even marginally over the maximum is likely to be pulled over and ticketed.

By rail

By air

Indianapolis International Airport is a small facility handling a correspondingly small amount of traffic relative to other airports serving major US cities. AirTran Airways and Northwest Airlines provide the bulk of services with connections maintained with a large number of US cities. International visitors are invariably required to fly into a larger US airport and take a connecting flight.

Indianapolis International airport

Situated 11km from the city, Indianapolis International Airport is a single terminal facility handling around eight million passengers. Major airlines operating from the airport include Northwest, American, Delta, AirTran, Southwest and Air Canada. The terminal offers a good selection of passenger facilities and has an extensive number of parking spaces available.

Besides the information centre situated in the central ticket area, the terminal offers essential facilities such as ATMs and a bureau de change counter located on the upper level. For dining and refreshments, theres a wide variety of establishments which includes popular names such as Auntie Annes, Cinnabon, McDonalds, Starbucks, Subway and TGI Fridays. Those passengers wanting alcohol will find the Budweiser Brewhouse on hand offering its famous beer as well as a variety of other beverages. For shopping, an 8,000 square foot retail corridor is home to a selection of outlets including Sunglass Hut International, Capital News, Hat World, Hudson Booksellers and Perfumania.

Indianapolis airport transportation

For transfers to the city on arrival at Indianapolis International Airport, the cheapest option is to take the scheduled city bus service which runs to the downtown district from the Courtesy Vehicle Island area, making stops on the west side of the city en route. Private shuttles are available from the Ground Transportation Centre located at the lower level of the Parking Garage. Taxis can be hired for service from the Terminal side of Lower Terminal Drive; a call button located at the side of the waiting area will alert taxis to your presence. Those passengers wishing to travel in style can hire a limousine from any of a selection of companies located at the airport. Car hire companies are also on hand for those who prefer to make their own way while free hotel shuttles are available to many visitors with reservations.
