Be Safe in Houston
Travel within the United States is generally trouble-free. However, travellers should be aware that the US shares with the rest of the world an increased threat from terrorist incidents. Security has been heightened particularly at airports. Following the counter terrorist operation in the UK on 10 August 2006, the terror alert status on all flights has been raised, particularly on those originating in the UK. Further restrictions on hand luggage apply and travellers are advised to check on the latest situation with airlines in advance of travel.
Safety
Like any large city in the world, Houston has its share of unsavory characters, so always remember to be vigilant and use common sense. Walk only where you see other pedestrians, and reduce vulnerability by sticking to well lit areas at night, and trying as much as possible not to be alone in the streets; Houston isnt a walking-around kind of town. As a pedestrian, dont step out in front of cars in a crosswalk, dont automatically expect drivers to stop for you. Houstonians drive aggressively.
Also be careful when walking near the Metro Rail track, especially at intersections, and do not ignore the signs. The trains move very quickly and silently, at almost all hours of the day and night. If driving, drive across the tracks only when you are sure it is safe to do so, especially at night. The trains whistle is quiet and can often not be heard by a driver inside a car.

Health
There are no specific health risks associated with travel within the US in general or Houston in particular. Medical facilities are excellent, but expensive. Only emergencies are treated without prior payment and treatment can be refused without evidence of insurance or proof of funds. For tourists, good medical or travel insurance with medical cover is essential.
