Houston Restaurants
With so many cultures represented in Houston, it is no great surprise that the city has dining opportunities covering a wide range of cuisine. If you are adventurous and like to sample the flavours of the world, you will have a lot of chances to do so while visiting. In fact, you would have to live here for a very long time to exhaust all the catering possibilities.
Local cuisine
The kind of food that really says Texas to most visitors is the barbecue and Tex-Mex. Barbecue does not really require a definition; Tex-Mex consists primarily of traditional Mexican favourites like burritos, fajitas and nachos, plus many other popular dishes, with Texan modifications. Steaks are considered to be a strong runner-up as a Texas tradition, with some of the finest steakhouses in the state located in Houston.
Where to eat
To roll up your sleeves and hobnob on a down-home basis with the locals, visit one of the citys very casual diners or cafs. Some of them are quaint, while others are full-blown dives, but do not be fooled by appearances. Some of those dives serve up some mighty tasty food. Spanish Flower, which also happens to be one of the citys 24-hour dining spots, is a prime example. When it comes to Tex-Mex, the citys restaurants offer a variety of atmospheres to suit every mood. Restaurants like Chuys are overflowing with piatas and other fiesta-style dcor and serve up delicious traditional Tex-Mex.
The close proximity to the Gulf of Mexico has inspired a love of seafood which has, in turn, inspired the birth of a large number of seafood restaurants across the city. Louisianas love of Cajun and Creole cooking has also made its way into Houston over the years. Brennans and Copelands of New Orleans are both examples of New Orleans originals that have made a mark on the spicy side of the Houston dining scene.
Certain areas of the city have a concentration of specific restaurant types in a small area, but you will find a good sprinkling of most types throughout the city. No matter where you stay when you visit, you will find popular dining spots within walking distance, or you can hit the road for a broader selection.
