Things to do in Hartford
Hartford is a revitalised city which features several interesting attractions that will make a short stay in this classic New England town a rewarding experience.
The city centre is perhaps the best place to stay, where youll find several excellent hotel establishments and outstanding dining options situated close to most popular tourist sites.
Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art
This museum enjoys the reputation as being the United States first public art museum. Since 1842, it has retained some of New Englands most interesting collections, with its specialty being American paintings from the 19th and 20th centuries. Works from classic artists like Wyeth, Remington and Rockwell can be admired here along with pop artists of the 1950s and 60s. Email: info@wadsworthatheneum.org.
Mark Twain House and Museum
It was in this Hartford Victorian mansion that the mature writer known as Mark Twain completed seven of his finest works. Long celebrated for its stylistic idiosyncrasy and apparent whimsy nature, the mansion is more accurately noted as a sophisticated and inspired expression of modern architecture, while the museum offers a penetrating look at Mark Twain's remarkable peers. A visit to the 2,000square-foot gallery is a must for every literature buff. Here you can observe rare manuscripts, artefacts, photographs and fine and decorative arts which have never been displayed before. Email: info@marktwainhouse.org.
Old State House
This 1796 National Historic Landmark was designed by Charles Bulfinch and is one of the United States oldest state houses. The building boasts beautifully restored historic rooms. You also have the option to experience an interactive audio tour, visit the immersive Education Center, attend a programme and shop in the Museum Store. Email: info@ctosh.org.
Elizabeth Park
This fabulous park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, Elizabeth Park encompasses 102 acres and features plenty of lovely garden areas, greenhouses, pathways, lawns, a pond, a picnic grove and recreation areas. Email: elizabeth_park@sbcglobal.net.
Civic Center
The Hartford Civic Center Veterans Memorial Coliseum and Exhibition Center opened in January 1975. It was the legendary Glenn Campbell who kicked off the start of a weekend filled with events. Johnny Mathis and the Hartford Symphony Orchestra performed on stage the next evening. Hartfords professional hockey team, the New England Whalers played their first match at the Hartford Civic Center. Since that day, the Civic Center has remained the states home for entertainment and premier sports. Email: hccinfo@thegarden.com.
Bushnell Park Carousel
This stunning carousel dates from 1914 and stands in Bushnell Park next to a giant Turkey oak tree in the shadow of the modern skyscrapers. The 24-sided pavilion boasts the well-known 48 hand-carved wooden horses and in addition, there are two lovers' chariots swirling around a lively Wurlitzer band organ, which creates a vibrant and happy atmosphere. The carousel is operational from May through mid-October and by special request. Email: bushnellpark@djstrat.com.
