Travel to Fort Worth
Fort Worth was once a rough and lawless frontier town, but it has emerged to become one of the largest cities in the state of Texas. Today, Fort Worth has an exceptional cultural arts district, a vibrant downtown and financial centre, and well-preserved Western heritage sites that are popular tourist attractions. A visit to Fort Worth is unique, as it combines the spirit of a frontier town and the beauty of the American West.
Transportation to Fort Worth
Its easy to get to Forth Worth, as it has the second largest airport in the United States. This busy urban city is also linked to the rest of the United States by excellent freeways, highways and interstate roads, rail and bus services.
What to see
The main tourist attraction at Fort Worth is its famed Stockyards National Historic district. This area has been renovated and refurbished to look very much like it did more than 100 years ago, when Fort Worth was a small frontier town filled with cowboys. Other major sights are mostly found downtown and include internationally renowned art galleries; the National Cow Girl Museum and Hall of Fame, which is the only museum of its kind in the world; and Sundance Square, with its shopping outlets, restaurant, bars, theatres, gardens and parks.
Daytrips
Dallas is synonymous with the assassination of President JF Kennedy, and South Fork Ranch, home of the Ewings, is just a short drive from Fort Worth. In Dallas, there is plenty to see and do including visiting museums that focus on the assassination and conspiracy theories, viewing the building from which the president was shot, enjoying state-of-the-art roller coasters and other thrilling rides at theme parks, and visiting the wax museum, zoo and aquarium. The city is also a great place for shopping and it has an exciting nightlife scene.
Visitors to Dinosaur Valley Park, about 50 miles west of Fort Worth, can walk along its river bed and find dinosaur tracks that are more than 110 million years old. There is also an exhibition centre with life size models of dinosaurs which is very interesting and frighteningly real!
Activities and leisure
The parks and gardens offer a pleasant venue for walking while taking in the beauty of the flowers, plants and trees. Fort Worth is a sophisticated urban centre, so leisure activities also include bowling, pool, snooker and golfing. Nearby are several large lakes where fishing, boating, sailing and swimming can be enjoyed. Camping, hiking and picnicking can also be enjoyed at Fort Worth and you may just want to try your hand at a rodeo!
Safety issues
Fort Worth is generally a safe place to visit, but like all big cities, there are places that you should not venture to when it gets dark. Tourists should be especially aware of their surroundings and not invite untoward incidents, like being robbed or having your bag snatched, by carelessly displaying large amounts of money when paying for items or wearing excessive jewellery. The rule of thumb here, as in all big cities, is to remain alert to possible dangers, but to not let any safety concerns stop you from having fun.
