Fort Myers is nestled along the panoramic shoreline of the River Caloosahatchee and is the governmental and historical hub of Lee County, Florida. Transportation to Fort Meyers

Southwest Florida International Airport is situated ten miles south-east of the city. The facility serves mainly domestic destinations, with regular flights from Orlando, New York JFK and Chicago OHare airports. Amtrak Trains provide railway services between Fort Myers and its nearest station, in Tampa.

If travelling by car from the north, take the Interstate 95 or the Florida Turnpike south running to Fort Lauderdale. Interstate 95 goes along the eastern coast, and the Florida Turnpike goes south from its intersection with Interstate 75 through Orlando into southern Florida. Interstate 75 runs right through Fort Myers. Another major route is US 41. The Greyhound Bus Company operates buses following routes between Fort Myers and other cities in Florida State, as well as significant cities across the United States.

What to see

The Edison Ford Complex is one of Fort Meyers star attractions. It is without a doubt a must-see attraction for visitors who are interested in American history. The Shell Factory is a fascinating visitor centre, offering the most comprehensive collection of rare fossils, coral sponges and shells in the world.

The Calusa Nature Center & Planetarium is set on 105 acres of land. This privately owned planetarium operates on a non-profit basis and offers daily tours, during which tourists have the opportunity to get up close and personal with creatures such as snakes, crocodiles and alligators.

Safety issues

As in any major city, street crime is something to watch out for in Fort Myers. However, the ambience around the city is non-intimidating and if you behave calm and confident, you are likely to be quite safe. Obviously it is highly recommended you take out travel insurance for you or your family.
