In terms of sporting activity, Fort Myers is a relatively low profile city and visitors expecting the big spectator thrills of other Florida cities, such as Tampa with its Buccaneers and Daytona with its racing events, will probably be a little disappointed. However, there are a number of resident sports teams as well as others from neighbouring cities who use Fort Myers as a training base, so some opportunities for stadium visits can be found if you are here at the right time of year.

Baseball

Visiting baseball fans should take the time to check out the city’s local team, the Fort Myers Miracle. While only playing minor league baseball, games at their home Hammond Stadium are well attended and local support is extremely dedicated. During spring, the Boston Red Sox also use Fort Myers as a training base.

Other sporting options

If playing sport as opposed to spectating is more your thing, then Fort Myers is home to an extensive selection of golf courses. The city’s tropical weather system provides sunshine for most of the year and makes for ideal golfing conditions, while the ample rainfall during the monsoon season creates perfect lush green courses on which to play. Meanwhile, keep-fit fans will find many of the city’s better hotels offer fully-equipped fitness centres, which are free to paying guests. In addition, the beach is the perfect place to take an early morning jog, swim or catch a few waves on your surfboard if the tide is right.
