Travel to Fort Lauderdale

Colloquially known as the "Venice of America" on account of an expansive and intricate canal system, Fort Lauderdale is a city situated in Broward County, Florida, in the United States. The city is a popular visitor destination, both for its own selection of interesting attractions and for its proximity to Miami and Palm Beach, both of which offer their own array of visitor interests. Fort Lauderdale has something of a reputation as a party city on account of its popular beaches and extensive collection of bars and nightclubs.

Transportation to Fort Lauderdale

Fort Lauderdale is easily reachable via a number of different transportation options; however, the majority of holidaymakers choose to fly into Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport, which is situated a mere 5km from the citys downtown district. The airport offers passengers a number of ground transportation options as well as a comprehensive selection of passenger facilities including essentials such as ATMs, bureaux de change and dining and shopping outlets. If you are travelling overland to Fort Lauderdale, then you can reach the city by train, Greyhound coach or rental car.

What to see

Fort Lauderdales attractions are based around natural and historical aspects of the city and are generally available to visitors via organised trips. The fascinating past of the Seminole Indians is evident at the Big Cypress Seminole Indian Reservation, which can be accessed via the Billie Swamp Safari. The beauty of the ocean can be explored on Glassbottom boat tours, while the Everglades can be explored on the Jungle Queen Riverboat Tours. A number of museums are also on hand providing a deeper insight into the areas natural and social history.

Day trips

Opportunities for day trips are plentiful, especially if you have a rental car at your disposal. The neighbouring city of Miami is located within easy driving distance of Fort Lauderdale and offers attractions such as the Barnacle State Historic Park, Biscayne National Park, Everglades Safari Park and the Miami MetroZoo, as well as miles of fantastic golden sandy beaches. West Palm Beach, to the north, also offers some beautiful beach areas as well as attractions such as the Lion Country Safari and the Norton Museum of Art.

Activities and leisure

The beach offers numerous opportunities for visitors to get active with large expanses where you can head for a game of Frisbee or similar sand-based pursuit. Alternatively, you can take to the water where activities such as waterskiing, jet skiing, snorkelling, scuba diving, surfing and windsurfing await. Golf fans can get a few holes in at the American Golfers Club on Federal Highway. Ample opportunities are available to watch the citys local sporting teams with American Football, hockey and baseball all on the list.

Provided visitors act sensibly and avoid modes of behaviour that are likely to bring obvious negative consequences, holidaying in Fort Lauderdale is a largely safe experience that brings no immediate threats to either health or safety.
