Travel to Detroit

Located in Michigan, the state of the Great Lakes, Detroit offers much more than just its legacy as Americas motor city. This is where the Motown sound was born, and visitors can trace the citys past as well as enjoy its many contemporary attractions.

What to see

Detroit, or Motortown, is the main metropolitan centre of Michigan, and is well-known for its links with the automotive industry and old-style R&B music. The city now also stands in high regard as a hub for arts and entertainment. The Detroit Historical Museum is a good spot to start, with exhibits re-telling the past of the city from its roots as an Indian village to its days as a French trading post and its transformation into the industrial heart of America. The Motown Museum is also well worth a visit and showcases the history of the birth of the original music style, through stars such as the Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and the Jackson Five.

Daytrips

The city of Ann Arbor, located 47 miles west of downtown Detroit, is full of cultural and historical attractions, and has a lively central city area offering plenty of entertainment. Windsor is just a hop across the Detroit River and offers a variety of shopping and entertainment at a discount, thanks to the exchange rate between US and Canadian currencies.

Activities and leisure

Several professional sports teams call Detroit their home and play at major venues in the city. For those who prefer to take part in the action themselves, golf courses are also on hand as well as a number of beautiful beaches offering water sports and camping.

Safety issues

Always take regular breaks when driving across long distances and be particularly wary of leaving your car parked on the streets at night in any city, especially Detroit. Travellers should also beware of pickpockets. The cost of medical care in the US is very high; therefore, we strongly recommend you take out travel insurance for you and your family.
