Detroit Leisure

Detroit is home to several professional sports teams, who play at major venues in the city. Golf courses are also available as well as several beautiful beaches, offering water sports and camping.

Spectator sports

Detroit has professional teams playing North America’s four major sports. All but two teams play at venues within the city itself; the Detroit Pistons and the Detroit Shock basketball teams play in suburban Auburn Hills. The city has three active major sports venues: Comerica Park, home to the Detroit Tigers baseball team; Ford Field, home of the Detroit Lions football team; and Joe Louis Arena, home of the ice hockey team, the Detroit Red Wings. Detroit is well-known for its keen hockey fans, earning the city the nickname ‘Hockeytown’.

Golf

Detroit is home to a number of popular golf clubs and 18-hole golf courses, many of which are located close to central Detroit, often with great views of the surrounding area. There is also a variety of golf courses just a short drive from the city and golf is especially popular near Detroit. Chandler Park Golf Course is an up-to-date and quite flat 18-hole public golf course, suitable for beginners as well as more experienced golfers. Laid out in the early 1900s, the Rogell Golf Course is well-known for its fast greens and long fairways.

Beaches

Lining the entire West Michigan shoreline, from Mackinaw City in the north to the Warren Dunes in the south, there are hundreds of sandy white beaches. A quick peek at any Michigan map will show lots of public beaches, ideal for sunbathing and swimming. Located in the Macomb County area of Michigan, close to Detroit city centre, the Metro Beach area offers excellent sports facilities including a large swimming pool, water sports, tennis courts and fitness trails as well as a huge freshwater beach and nature walks.
