Transportation to Des Moines
The easiest way to travel to Des Moines is by air. The city has its own international airport in the southern part of the city, which is equipped with facilities for passengers. From the airport, you can use limousine or taxi services to gret to the city centre. Those who stay near the airport can get a free shuttle bus ride to their destination.
Alternatively, you can also drive to Des Moines via interstate routes. Enter I-80 if you come from the east or the west, or I-35 if you come from the north or the south. Once you are in the Des Moines area, the city can be easily accessed via I-235.
What to see
Des Moines might not be the best-known city in the United States of America, but it is charming in its own unique way. With many art scenes that fill the city with beauty and creativity, Des Moines is a favourite destination for those into the arts, and it attracts artists from all around the world.
The magnificent Art Center displays many outstanding art pieces, while the Capitol Building is a state-of-the-art attraction itself. Having a car in Des Moines is convenient and worthwhile. With all roads in good condition, driving in Des Moines and into neighbouring cities is easy and eye-opening. Those with children should make a daytrip to the National Balloon Classic, located in the east of Indianola, which is about 19kms from Des Moines. Here, you can be amazed at the many gigantic, colourful balloons that compete in the hot-air balloon competitions held here.

Des Moines is ideal for those who love fairs and festivals. Des Moines Arts Festival is organised annually and you can find plenty of artists from all over the world here. Iowa State Fair is also very interesting, with its many fun competitions and games. Those who wish to relax amid the beautiful countryside can find many parks around the city. Sports fans will enjoy a variety of activities at Sleepy Hollow Sports Park such as wall-climbing, swimming, golfing, a shooting range and a go-kart track.
Safety issues
One of the safest cities in the United States of America, Des Moines is a friendly city that welcomes tourists to witness many outstanding art scenes. However, this does not mean that you shouldn't take extra care of your belongings, especially if you attend annual festivals and fairs, which are always crowded with people.
The weather in Des Moines can be very unpredictable and even unbearable during the summer. Be prepared for sudden changes of weather and always carry a bottle of water. It is highly recommended that you take out travel insurance for you and your family.
