Be Safe in Daytona Beach

Like many cities in the state of Florida, Daytona Beach suffers somewhat from high crime levels with robbery and aggravated assault close to three times the national average. Hopefully you should not see any evidence of crime while you are on holiday in Daytona Beach, but since it undoubtedly exists you are advised to take various precautions in order to avoid becoming victims.

Safety

Since robbery in the city is at such a high level, visitors are advised to avoid carrying more cash with them than is entirely necessary and also to keep valuables on their person to a minimum. Expensive jewellery should be left in the hotel safe or kept well hidden under clothing if to be worn outside. Projecting an air of confidence and awareness when out and about is one of the best ways of deterring would-be criminals from targeting you. Avoiding standing on street corners with maps in hand looking lost and bewildered will go a long way to convincing others that you are a savvy resident of the city. Don’t go out alone and certainly don’t take shortcuts through dark or unpopulated areas. If you are planning to hire a car then obvious warnings include not leaving valuables of any description on show in your vehicle and parking the car in a well lit and populated area wherever possible.

Health

Daytona Beach offers no immediate risks to physical health. This city is free from water born diseases and epidemics of any description. Mosquitoes are around, just as in any US city, but malaria is virtually unheard of these days so if you choose to wear repellent it’s to protect yourself against the discomfort of the bites only. During the summer months, the sun can get especially hot and visitors are advised to wear sunscreen with an appropriate SPF for their skin type. Be warned that Florida’s proximity to the equator makes the sun’s effects particularly intense. The city is clean and hygiene standards in restaurants are strictly monitored. In spite of all this, visitors inevitably fall sick from time to time and require medical treatment; having an appropriate travel insurance policy will ensure that your bills are paid should you incur any through hospital visits.
