Travel to Dallas

Dallas is often affectionately known by locals as the Big D, and the city is located in the northwestern part of Texas. Dallas dates back to the 1840s, when it developed as a key financial hub in this part of America. Made infamous by the assassination of President John F Kennedy at Dallas Dealey Plaza and the hugely popular Dallas television show in the 1980s, the city is also known for its major sporting achievements by the Dallas Cowboys, who have won the Super Bowl numerous times.

Transportation to Dallas

Dallas International Airport is one of the largest in the world, operating frequent flights to domestic, EU and international destinations. Trains connect the airport to the city centre, while taxis and rental cars are also available. The city is well connected to the rest of the country by the Amtrak railway network, while Greyhound buses also link the city to other states.

What to see

Dallas offers not just financial services, but plenty of attractions to keep visitors busy. From the many historic monuments commemorating the citys founding and JFK, to excellent museums and world-class amusement parks, there is something to please most tastes. For nature lovers, there are plenty of parks, a zoo and an aquarium to visit. Dont forget a trip to Southfork Ranch, the setting for the legendary TV show, Dallas.

Daytrips

Drive in just about any direction and you'll find pine woods, wildflowers and little towns worth a day-long visit. Lake Ray Roberts State Park, located an hours drive north of Dallas in rolling Texas ranch country, is one of Texas' newest state parks. Granbury is an historic Victorian town situated on the banks of Lake Granbury, in the lush Brazos River Valley.

Activities and leisure

Outdoor activities are plentiful in Dallas. The city has a large number of amusement and water parks, ranches and rodeos, wildlife centres and other outdoor activities that can be enjoyed by both adults and children. Golf aficionados will find over 30 golf courses to practice on, while horse lovers will want to attend a real Texan rodeo. Rodeo season is from April to October.

Safety issues

Texas is huge and driving distances can be vast, so ensure you have plenty of water and spare petrol. Visitors should also be wary in some areas of Dallas and Fort Worth at night. Due to the high costs of medical care in the US, it is advisable to take out travel insurance before visiting Dallas.
