Be Safe in Columbus
Like most other American cities, Columbus tends to suffer from a high crime rate. Most of the crime occurs in the densely populated urban areas, so you should take necessary precautions to ensure your safety.
Safety
Columbus is usually a safe place to walk around during the daytime. For tourists, the main dangers are bag-snatchers, pickpockets and muggers. You can reduce the likelihood of encountering violence or serious problems as long as you are sensible. Avoid carrying more cash than you need and do not wear expensive jewellery or have cameras hanging around your neck. If you are staying in a hotel, make sure you use their safe for your valuable items. Men should not carry wallets in their back pockets and women need to pay close attention to their bags while shopping. Backpackers should keep their packs locked and it is advisable to wear it with the straps over both shoulders. Theft from cars is also a problem so avoid leaving any valuables in a vehicle no matter where it's parked.
Many of the streets in the suburbs are quiet at night-time, so it's best to avoid walking alone. Take a taxi to get to your destination instead. The nightlife areas also tend to see an increase in crime as people start to leave the bars and clubs.

Health
There are few health concerns in America and no special vaccinations are required. Food hygiene standards in restaurants are high and closely monitored. If you do fall ill or have an accident, there are modern medical facilities available and the treatment is excellent, although medical costs throughout the country are exceptionally high. The emergency services will get to you quickly and charge you later.
If you need to see a doctor, consult the Yellow Pages under ‘Clinics’ or ‘Physicians and Surgeons’. Many medications that are available over the counter at home (e.g. codeine-based painkillers) require a prescription in the US. Brand names can be confusing, so it's best to ask for advice at the pharmacy. Make sure you have appropriate travel insurance that will cover all medical costs, and be sure to keep all your receipts for later claims.
