Columbus Transport
Columbus' public transport system is limited to buses and taxis. There is no metropolitan train service (Columbus is the second largest city in America not to have a train service). There are many attractions in the region, so hiring a car is a good idea. Driving around the city is relatively easy as the road network is based on a grid. Traffic can be heavy at times, especially during the rush hour. If you don't plan on travelling too far, then you can rely on the efficient bus system to get around.
By bus
The Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA) runs the municipal bus service in Columbus. There are 53 routes around the city; the most useful connecting downtown with German Village, Short North and North Campus. All buses are equipped with bike racks for those who want to cycle and ride. Operating times vary depending on the route and day of the week, so it's best to pick up a map and timetable from their office on Broad Street.
When boarding a COTA bus, you can either pay your fare in the fare box or swipe your pass in the designated area on the fare box. Neither COTA bus operators nor fare boxes provide change, so make sure you have the exact money when you board. The routes are designed to create a network so that by transferring from one to another, you can reach your destination. If you are going to transfer, ask the operator on the first bus you ride for a transfer ticket. This is valid for 2 hours, 30 minutes from the time of issue and may not be used to backtrack to your point of origin.
Taxis
There are several private taxi companies in Columbus which can be flagged down on the street or ordered by telephone. All taxis are electronically metered and have an initial fare and then an additional charge for each mile or waiting time.
Tourist services
There are many tours in and around Columbus which can be booked at one of the tourist centres in the city. The Central Ohio Transit Authority also sells a useful day pass, which covers transport on all of the public buses.
From the airport
Passengers arriving at the airport requiring ground transportation can choose between buses and taxis. There is a regular public bus that serves many destinations in the city and taxis can be found outside the Baggage Claim level of the terminal walkway. Car hire companies are also on hand and you can book online to ensure a vehicle.
