Colorado Springs Weather

The pleasant year-round climate of Colorado Springs is a key factor in the region’s high quality of life. Sitting just outside the Rocky Mountain range, the city enjoys surprisingly mild weather and few extremes. Despite its relatively high elevation, Colorado Springs gets less snow than similar cities such as Denver or Salt Lake City. The neighbouring mountains capture most of the precipitation from incoming storms, leaving the region with dry and sunny conditions most of the year.

Distinct seasons

With an elevation of 6,035 feet, Colorado Springs enjoys four distinct seasons and a number of climatic advantages. During the summer months from June to August, the days are pleasantly hot, but when the sun sets, the air cools down significantly, creating refreshing night-time conditions.

The region is classified as an alpine desert, averaging 250 days of sunshine each year and low levels of precipitation and humidity. Winter brings cold temperatures and occasional snowfalls, but the snow melts quickly thanks to the radiant sun. Warm Chinook winds from the northeast also help to keep things mild during the winter months. When the Chinook winds are blowing, the temperatures can become shockingly warm, allowing residents to enjoy outdoor activities, even in the middle of January.

Glorious spring and autumn

Colorado Springs often sees Indian Summers, which are long lingering weeks of warm and sunny weather, even at the beginning of autumn. The autumn is one of the nicest times of the year, with excellent temperatures, blue skies and amazing bursts of colour from the mountain slopes. Spring is also pleasant, as the first truly warm days emerge and life begins to return to the trees and plants.
