Colorado Springs shouldn’t present any problems to your safety or health. There’s rarely any crime in this small city, and the locals are generally friendly. However, you should still take the usual precautions when visiting a new place.

Safety

Although Colorado Springs is one of the safest cities in America, visitors still need to be vigilant about their valuables, as you would in any large town. Cars with rental licence plates are often targeted by thieves, so don’t leave anything of value in your car and try to park it in your hotel garage at night. It’s strongly suggested that all visitors to Colorado Springs buy travel insurance to ensure that any mishaps don’t ruin your trip.

Health

There are no serious health risks in Colorado Springs which will cause you concern. The quality of the tap water is good and it is completely safe to drink. The food in Colorado Springs’ restaurants is also up to international standards.

Colorado Springs’ high elevation requires a few special precautions for visitors from low-lying countries. Give yourself a couple of days to acclimatise to the elevation change before heading up to the mountain summits. Headaches and dizziness are the first signs of altitude sickness. Children under two years and adults with heart problems should avoid all excursions above 2,000 metres. Also, be aware that the Colorado sun is extremely strong at higher elevations. Wear plenty of sunscreen and a hat when you venture out, especially into the mountains, and drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. 

If anything does happen during your visit, there are excellent medical facilities right in Colorado Springs. All of the staff and doctors speak English and can assist with any problems. Visitors from other countries should check whether they are covered by their medical policy in the United States. If not, it’s wise to get some travel insurance to cover any unexpected hospital costs. The price of travel insurance is very small compared to a typically exorbitant American medical bill.
