Getting to Colorado Springs
Colorado Springs’ central location and role as the state’s second largest city, makes it easy to reach by several means. The city’s airport is busy, but most international travellers arrive at Denver’s airport first before heading an hour south to Colorado Springs. Train travel is possible, although trains only stop in Denver. The Greyhound bus is one of the most popular ways to travel, as the network connects nearly every town in America. Colorado Springs is also located along several major highways, making driving here a very easy.
By car
Drivers coming from Denver to the north or New Mexico from the south will use I-25, which passes right through the city. Highway 24 is the main east-west route, although the much larger I-70 runs through Denver, an hour to the north. There are several small roads leading to Colorado Springs which are slower but more scenic.
By rail
Although there is no railroad connection in Colorado Springs, Amtrak’s California Zephyr stops at Denver on its daily Chicago to San Francisco route.
By bus
America’s premier bus company, Greyhound Bus, has numerous connections that pass through Colorado Springs. The interstate bus network is extensive and can take you to virtually any destination in the country. The prices are very reasonable and the service is generally good. Colorado Springs’ bus terminal is located in the downtown area.
By air
Colorado Springs Airport services over 100 flights each day from destinations across the country. However, it only handles domestic flights, so international travellers will have to fly into Denver International Airport, an hour by car to the north, and take a connecting flight or shuttle bus to Colorado Springs. Many local hotels provide courtesy vans to and from the airport, and there are also taxis and shuttle buses available.
Colorado Springs Airport
Colorado Springs Airport contains a single terminal which services around 100 daily flights to destinations around the United States. There is no international service, which means most foreign visitors will fly into Denver’s airport and then make a connection to Colorado Springs. All of the major American airlines fly into Colorado Springs as well as many of the regional and budget carriers.
The airport’s single terminal has all the usual facilities which a traveller might need. ATMs, a bank and a currency exchange office can be found in the main terminal area as well as restaurants, news stands, gift shops and duty-free shopping. An information desk can be found in the Arrivals Hall of the terminal (tel: +1 719 550 1972).
Colorado Springs Airport transportation
The most popular way to travel from the airport into the city is by private shuttle bus. There are several companies providing door-to-door service for a reasonable price. Many hotels also offer courtesy shuttle buses for their guests; ask about this option from your hotel. Taxis are available outside the Arrivals Hall, offering the most convenient but also the most expensive way to get to your hotel. For a bit of style, there are a couple of private limousine companies operating out of the airport. They are surprisingly affordable and can be booked at the airport’s transportation desk. If you rent a car, simply follow the sign from the airport exit, which will lead you straight to the city centre.
