What to see

The former industrial giant of Cleveland has undergone something of a renaissance in recent years. This can be seen at the old warehouses on Lake Erie which, rather than holding cargo, now contain restaurants, cafs and bars. Tourists should visit the Cleveland Museum of Art, which focuses on modern art. The Cleveland Museum of Natural History has a large collection of fossils and geological specimens, with a special accent on prehistoric times. Also, the Great Lakes Science Centre has an ultra-modern OMNIMAX 360-degree movie theatre.

Daytrips

Chagrin Falls to the southeast of Cleveland is very close by and may be the most appealing destination for a daytrip. It has to be one of the most diverse and hippest small towns in the country. To the south of Cleveland and between Cleveland and Akron lies the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, which is certainly worth an outing. Near the park is a little historic hamlet village called Peninsula, with quaint shops and restaurants, and also a hostel.

Activities and leisure

The Cleveland area features some of the finest public golf courses in the country, while neighbouring Akron annually hosts the World Golf Championships NEC Invitational at Firestone Country Club. The neighbouring region is also home to two major ski venues: Boston Mills Ski Resort and Brandywine Ski Resort, whose slopes are packed from Thanksgiving through to March.

Safety issues

Caution should be advised in some areas of Cleveland after dark. If youre driving, do not park your vehicle on the street and be sure to lock all the doors. Water sports can pose additional dangers. Due to the high cost of medical care in the US, it is highly advisable to take out travel insurance.
