Getting to Cleveland

Visitors destined for Cleveland can choose from a variety of options for getting here, with arriving by air being the most popular means for those coming from abroad. The road network is well-developed, making driving by private or hire car a good proposition and also providing good conditions for coach services coming from North American cities. The city is served by the efficient Amtrak railway network.

Cleveland’s international airport is a busy facility that provides connections with domestic cities as well as with significant EU and international destinations. The airport is operated by Cleveland municipality and is an efficient facility.

By car

Cleveland is easily accessed by road, with Ohio’s well-developed motorway network serving the city from most major destinations. Running south from the shores of Lake Erie, I-71 links the city with Columbus and Cincinnati, while I-77 connects the city with Akron and points in the eastern part of Ohio. Interstate 480 and I-271 service some suburbs lying on the southern perimeter of the city centre including Brooklyn, Garfield Heights and Solon, by forming bypasses around the city.

By rail

Cleveland's train station is located just across from the Great Lakes Science Centre and provides connections to and from major US destinations. From New York, the journey can be made by train in 12 hours; from Chicago, in 7 hours; while from Pittsburgh, it takes 3 hours, 30 minutes. By bus

Cleveland is connected to the extensive Greyhound coach network, serving most major US destinations. The terminal is located at 1465 Chester Avenue. Facilities include restaurants, toilets, lockers and tourist information. Phone: +1 216 781 0520; website: www.greyhound.com.

By air

Cleveland International Airport is located 11 miles southwest of the city centre and is a modern facility, offering daily scheduled flights to and from a large number of US, EU and international destinations. Train services, operating at 15-minute intervals run between the airport and downtown. Meanwhile, taxis are on hand, as are car hire companies. The airport offers good passenger facilities including ATMs, bureaux de change and information desks.

Cleveland Hopkins International Airport

Cleveland Hopkins Airport operates a single terminal with two levels, from which all arrivals and departures are dealt with. The lower level handles arrivals, while the main level handles departures. Flights operate daily to cities such as Frankfurt, London and Paris.

ATM and dining facilities can be found on both levels, while shopping facilities are located on the main level. Passengers in need of assistance will find the information desk on the Ticketing level of the main terminal, between the Southwest Airlines ticket counter and Security Checkpoint B.

Cleveland airport transportation

The airport's Ground Transportation Services Office is located at the north end of the Baggage Claim level of the main terminal, across from Baggage Claim belt 1. RTA's red train line provides regular service between the airport and downtown to Cleveland’s Tower City Station. The trip takes less than 30 minutes and trains depart every 15 minutes for the majority of the day. RTA's station at the airport is located on the lower level of the main terminal.

Courtesy shuttles depart from the lower roadway island, which can be reached from the Baggage Claim level via doors 2 through 5. Hotel courtesy phones are also available on the Baggage Claim level, at the Traveller’s Information Centre boards. Taxis can be found outside Door 1 at the Baggage Claim level of the terminal.

A shuttle service is available to take all rental car customers from the main terminal to the rental car facility. Shuttles depart from the lower roadway island, which can be accessed by exiting from Door 5 on the Baggage Claim level of the main terminal.
