Cincinnati is not everyone's first port of call when visiting America, but with an abundance of attractions, stunning natural beauty and fine dining, Cincinnati is an ideal location for visitors of any age. Despite its large size, there is a real small town feel to Cincinnati. The citys downtown neighbourhood is compact and with little effort, it is possible to reach the breathtaking hills which overlook the city.
Cincinnati is a very attractive city, with a selection of Art Deco buildings, an abundance of historic monuments and a bustling riverfront. Sit back and watch the world go by at a riverside caf while you enjoy a taste of the citys famous chilli-con-carne and ponder what life would have been like when Jerry Springer was the city's mayor.
Transportation to Cincinnati
Cincinnati is home to one of Americas principal airports, Cincinnati-North Kentucky International Airport (CVG). The airport can be found just 20kms from the city centre. Arriving by air is the most convenient way to gain access the city, with the airport being exceptionally well-connected to the city by a number of ground transfer options.
If you are arriving from a domestic location, you can catch a Greyhound bus or take a train to the city. It is also possible to drive into Cincinnati, as the road network throughout the US is very impressive. Journeys using all of these modes of transport can be very long and arduous, so if you are driving, it is important to take regular breaks. Likewise, if you are arriving on public transport, it is important to take a good book with you.
What to see
The city of Cincinnati is bursting with attraction for visitors. There are impressive shopping malls and bustling local markets as well as many local parks, botanical gardens and historic monuments. One of the best ways to get around the city is on foot, as you will be able to fully experience the attractions on offer.
The citys tallest landmark is the world-famous Carew Tower, which offers breathtaking views from the observation deck. There are many museums available for culture buffs and numerous art galleries in an affluent part of the city. For the children, you will find theme parks, a zoo and an aquarium, and for romantics, a trip in a horse-drawn carriage around the citys sights is the perfect way to enjoy your holiday.
Daytrips
There are numerous daytrips which can be made from Cincinnati, and with the good transport links and an excellent road network; it is easy to reach most of the popular destinations. Hiking enthusiasts should head to Hocking Hills, where you will find some of Ohios best hiking trails, and in the spring it becomes a place of discovery, with something to offer just about everyone.
Other popular daytrips include a visit to the Neil Armstrong Air and Space Museum, brimming with memorabilia from the first man to have set foot on the moon; Columbus' Virtual Playground, the futuristic entertainment destination where the player is the attraction; and for those quieter moments, Aurora Retreat, which is located between the casinos of Lawrenceburg and Rising Sun.
Activities and leisure
Most visitors to Cincinnati attend at least one Reds game if they are staying during the baseball season. If you enjoy nature and hiking, you will love the abundant nature trails found in the city. There are also numerous parks for relaxing in and ample opportunities for shopping.
If you enjoy good food and fine dining, a tour of the local restaurants is definitely worthwhile, and for culture vultures, the art-house cinema offers experimental plays and performances by up-and-coming artists.
Safety issues
Overall, Cincinnati is a very safe destination for tourists. Unfortunately, the riots of 2001 and the resulting media frenzy have given the city an unfair reputation for violence and other crimes. As with any major city, there is a threat of petty crime. As long as you use common sense and are careful with your money and personal belongings, you should have no reason to worry.
If you fall ill or have an accident while in the city, you will find excellent medical facilities on hand, but these can prove to be expensive, so adequate insurance is important.
