Chicago Weather

The city of Chicago enjoys distinct seasons and its weather and temperatures are determined by two main factors. The city is located in the centre of a continental land mass, resulting in particularly hot summers and very cold winters, although the nearby lake has a moderating influence on the climatic extremes and adds a level of humidity. Chicagos weather is at its most pleasant from mid-September to October and from May to early June, and this is the best time to visit.

Spring and summer

Spring in Chicago is fairly short, lasting from the beginning of April to the end of May, with quite moderate temperatures and occasional frosts during the night. Summer is, however, much hotter, with the hottest months being June, July, August and September. The humidity at this time is often high, but the light winds from Lake Michigan bring cool refreshment. Evenings can be chilly and it may be necessary to take a light jacket when attending outdoor events. Average daily temperatures in summer are around 26C. In general, temperatures in the centre of Chicago tend to be somewhat higher than the rest of the city as the large buildings, skyscrapers and concrete absorb the heat.

Winter

Winter, in December, January and February can be very cold, with sub-zero temperatures and harsh winds on some days. This is also the wettest time of the year, and winter often sees snowfalls.
