Travel to Charlotte
Charlotte, North Carolina, is located in the Piedmont area and is near the border with South Carolina. Named after Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg, the city is nicknamed 'Queen City', and today, Charlotte is one of America's most significant financial hubs, second only to New York.
Transportation to Charlotte
Located just north of the border with South Carolina, Charlotte is a key travel and transportation hub for the Carolinas. Charlotte International Airport is a busy facility, providing connections to major domestic, European and international destinations.
The city is also served by the Amtrak railway network, connecting it with destinations such as New York, Washington DC and Atlanta. Greyhound buses also serve the city. Charlotte is intersected by several major interstates, namely I-77, heading north-south; and I-85, heading northeast-southwest; while I-40 heads east-west and passes Charlotte around 40 miles to the north.
What to see
Charlotte offers lots of popular tourist attractions such as the Bank of America Stadium, a vast 73,000-seat stadium, hosting many major sporting events and concerts; the Bank of America Corporate Centre, one of Charlotte's tallest skyscrapers, offering spectacular views of the cityscape; Charlotte's Carolina Raptor Centre, a popular birds of prey park with regular exhibits and presentations; Lowe's Motor Speedway, a major racing track with many exciting races throughout the year, pulling large crowds; and Paramount's Carowinds, a huge and exciting Charlotte theme park with all of the family favourites such as roller coasters, fast rides and special shows.
Daytrips
Charlotte and its surrounding area is wonderful to drive around, with spectacular scenery and impressive sights. Immerse yourself in rural Southern culture in Historic Brattonsville, home of the Bratton family, two centuries ago. Cannon Village, restored in the gentile and graceful style of the colonial era, features antiques, home furnishings and off-price and specialty shops.
Activities and leisure
Charlotte and its surroundings are home to no less than 50 golf courses, with superb facilities, challenging holes, scenic fairways and clubhouses. The city also hosts the popular NASCAR races, and visitors can try out their driving skills at one of the citys racing tracks.
Safety issues
Visitors should be careful when visiting wilderness regions like the Great Smoky Mountains and more isolated stretches of coastline. Caution is also advised in some areas of Charlotte, especially at night. Due to the prohibitive costs of healthcare in America, it is strongly recommended that visitors take out sufficient travel insurance.
