Getting to Charlotte

Visitors destined for Charlotte can choose from a variety of options for getting here, with arriving by air being the most popular means for those coming from abroad. The road network is well-developed, making driving by private or hire car a good option and also providing good conditions for coach services coming from North American cities. The city is also served by the efficient Amtrak railway network.

Charlotte’s international airport is a busy facility that provides connections with domestic cities as well as with significant EU and international destinations. The airport is operated by Charlotte municipality and is an efficient facility.

By car

Road access to Charlotte is easy, with North Carolina’s well-developed motorway network serving the city from most major destinations. Interstate 77 runs north and south through the city, and I-85 goes east and west, with I-485 looping around the city. US-29 and US-74 also lead into Charlotte.

By rail

Charlotte's train station is located on North Tryon Street and provides connections to and from major US destinations. From New York, the journey can be made by train in 13 hours; from Atlanta, in 5 hours, 30 minutes; while from Washington DC, it takes 8 hours. By bus

Charlotte is connected to the extensive Greyhound coach network, serving most major US destinations. The main bus terminal is at 601 West Trade Street.

By air

Charlotte International Airport is located eight miles from the centre of the city and is a modern facility, offering daily scheduled flights to and from a large number of US, EU and international destinations. The airport offers good passenger facilities including ATMs, bureaux de change and information desks.

Bus services, operating at hourly intervals, run between the airport and 4th Street, calling at Wilkinson and West boulevard. Meanwhile, taxis are on hand, as are car hire companies.

Charlotte International Airport

Charlotte Airport operates a single terminal with two levels, from which all arrivals and departures are dealt with. The lower level handles arrivals, while the main level handles departures. Flights operate daily to cities such as Frankfurt, London and Toronto.

ATMs and dining facilities can be found on both levels, while banking facilities are located on the main level. Passengers in need of assistance will find information desks opposite the Business Centre on the main level and opposite the Welcome Centre on the lower level.

Charlotte airport transportation

A public city bus departs every hour to downtown Charlotte, leaving from the east end of the upper Ticketing level of the terminal. Customers can pre-arrange shuttle service by contacting one of the various providers posted on the Visitor Information boards located in Baggage Claim.

Limousines, limousine sedans and contract van services are available by pre-arrangement between passengers and service providers. Taxi service is available from the curb side, on the Baggage Claim level. An attendant is on duty from 06:45 to 00:15. All vehicle rental counters are located on the lower Baggage Claim level.
