Charleston Transport
Despite the public transport options being limited in the city, the trolleys and buses that are available cover all areas of interest to tourists and run at regular intervals, meaning there is little need to take a taxi unless it is for the sake of convenience. The road system is also negotiable for those who wish to travel by car, while the city’s Amtrak station on Gaynor Avenue is only used for long distance travel, and there are no trains providing inner city services.
By car
Charleston is fairly easy to navigate by car, with the city based on a grid layout that is straightforward to negotiate. Because of the compact nature of the city, parking can be somewhat problematic in the downtown area. Driving etiquette in the city is easy to grasp, with most drivers observing the road rules and driving with care, making getting about by car a safe and convenient means of travel in the city.
By bus
CARTA buses transport locals and visitors alike around the city, with frequent services covering most areas including the bus and train stations. Passengers will find information about timetables and routes at each bus stop. Buses accept exact change only, and the fare must be paid as you board. More information about CARTA buses can be obtained at: www.ridecarta.com).
Additionally, there are Downtown Area Shuttles (DASH), which transport people along four city centre routes. Again, exact change is needed for you fare, which must be paid as you board the trolley.
Taxis
Taxis are readily available in Charleston and can be hailed in the street or pre-booked by telephone. They can also often be found waiting outside major hotels as well as outside the airport and the main bus and train station. Enquire with you hotels with regards to a reputable taxi firm. Services are metered, ensuring that what you are charged is fair.
Tourist services
If you plan on travelling around a lot, it may be worthwhile to buy a day or 10-ride pass that covers both buses and trolleys, which will give you a good saving against buying individual fares each time you want to use the city’s public transportation.
Other discounts are available at the visitor centre on Meeting Street as well as brochures, coupons and bus passes.
From the airport
Transportation methods from the airport to the city are fairly limited. Charleston can be reached by taxi or airport shuttle bus via the I-526; shuttles depart every 15 minutes and are reasonable priced. Alternatively, there are several car hire agencies represented at the airport, if you wish to self-drive.
