Travel to Buffalo

New York States second-largest city has many cultural, historic and lively entertainment areas. Buffalo is booming once again, with the help of re-development that has revitalised areas including the waterfront, along with a major airport expansion. It has always been an industrial city and one of the busiest of the Great Lakes ports, and it has a surprisingly rich history and many attractions to keep visitors busy.

Transportation to Buffalo

Visitors choosing to fly will arrive at Buffalo International Airport. There are several airlines that offer international routes as well as domestic flights. The airport is located just 10 miles from the city and buses and taxis are available for the short connection. Long distance buses serving destinations throughout America are operated by Greyhound, while Amtrak has a limited number of services to nearby cities as well as a daily service to Canada.

What to see

One of the most striking features in the city is the Art Deco architecture, in particular the richly decorated City Hall. Take the elevator to the 28th floor observation deck for fine views of Lake Erie and western New York.

Buffalo is also pleasantly green with a good choice of parks for relaxing walks. Delaware Park and the historic Forest Lawn Cemetery are among the best. The Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens has many plants from tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world.

For art lovers, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery features modern and contemporary collections. It is one of the nations oldest public arts organisations and it has a first-class reputation.

Daytrips

Niagara Falls is one of the most popular daytrips for visitors, and it is just a 20-minute drive from Buffalo. Hiring a car is definitely recommended if you are staying here. You can then take a drive either south along Lake Erie or northeast along Lake Ontario, for some spectacular views.

Leisure

Apart from the gentle leisure activities found in the city's many parks, there are plenty of other sports and recreation on offer. If you are visiting during the winter, then you might want to consider visiting one of the several ski resorts in the area. The 'lake effect' weather produces reliable snow, and many of the ski fields can be reached in less than one hour.

Safety issues

Although the level of crime is generally higher here than in most European cities, you should be able to avoid any serious problems as long as you are sensible and take adequate precautions.

The city is safe to walk around during the day; however it's best not to walk the streets alone at night, especially away from the main entertainment areas. We strongly recommend that you take out travel insurance for yourself and your family when visiting Buffalo.
