Be Safe in Buffalo
America has a reputation for having a high crime rate, although some of the time, this status does get exaggerated. Away from the urban centres, crime is often remarkably low, so if you take sensible precautions, then you should have a trouble-free visit.
Safety
Buffalo is not considered a dangerous place to walk around during the daytime. At night, many of the streets are quiet, with the exception of the nightlife zones of Chippawa Street and the Theatre district. It is recommended to travel with more than two people, and preferable to take a taxi to your destination.
Avoid carrying more cash than you need and do not wear expensive jewellery or have cameras hanging around your neck. If you are staying in a hotel, make sure you use their safe for your valuable items. Men should not carry wallets in their back pockets and women need to pay close attention to their bags while shopping. Backpackers should keep their packs locked, and it is advisable to wear bags with the straps over both shoulders.
Theft from cars is also a problem, so avoid leaving any valuables in a vehicle no matter where it's parked.

Health
There are few health concerns in America and no special vaccinations are required. Food hygiene standards in restaurants are high and closely monitored. If you do fall ill or have an accident, there are modern medical facilities available and treatment is excellent although the cost of treatment is exceptionally high.
If you need to see a doctor, consult the Yellow Pages of the telephone directory under ‘clinics’ or ‘physicians and surgeons’. Many medications available over the counter at home, for example, codeine-based painkillers, require a prescription in the US. Brand names can be confusing, so it's best to ask for advice at the pharmacy.
Make sure you have appropriate travel insurance that will cover all medical costs, and be sure to keep all your receipts for insurance claims.
