Getting to Buffalo

Reaching and leaving Buffalo is relatively straightforward and there are a number of different travel options. The main airport, Buffalo Niagara International Airport, is just 10 miles from the city and can easily be reached. Major highways link with other cities in the region and long distance bus services are frequent and reliable. The rail network may not be as extensive, but Buffalo has a station offering connections to various destinations in the country.

By car

American roads are very well-maintained and have good signposts. Reaching Buffalo by car is simple, as the road system connects to all large cities in the area. Four Interstate highways run through the area: I-90, I-190, I-290 and I-990.

Interstate 90 runs from Seattle to Boston and connects Buffalo's southern suburbs with the city and the eastern and northern suburbs. Interstate 190 runs through downtown and onto Niagara Falls and the Canadian border. Interstate 290 makes a 10-mile connection between I-190 and I-90, serving the area's northern suburbs. Interstate 990 starts at I-290 and runs over six miles to the Millersport Highway, just south of Lockport.

By rail

Amtrak serves Buffalo at two stations: Downtown Station (Exchange Street Station) and Depew Station. The Exchange Street Station is more convenient for downtown access, but the station itself barely exists. Depew Station is larger, but slightly east of the city. Also, Amtrak trains that run between Chicago and New York City only stop at Depew Station. All other trains stop at both stations. You can also get to and from Toronto with Amtrak.

By bus

Long distance buses arrive and depart from the terminal on Ellicott Street. Greyhound is the main operator and it has an extensive network to destinations throughout America. All Greyhound buses are equipped with air conditioning, an onboard restroom, reclining seats with headrests, footrests and tinted windows.

No reservations are necessary; simply arrive at the terminal at least an hour before departure to purchase your ticket. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Advance purchase tickets do not guarantee a seat. Greyhound buses travel around the clock, so you can travel by day and enjoy the scenery, or select a night service and relax in a reclining seat.

By air

Buffalo has one airport that handles international flights as well as many domestic routes. Budget airlines can provide cheap tickets to other destinations in America.

Buffalo Airport

Buffalo is serviced by the Buffalo Niagara International Airport, located 10 minutes drive east of downtown. The airport provides direct service to 21 national and international destinations with a number of different airlines.

There are buses and taxis for the transfer to the city centre, and car hire is also available. The terminal buildings have the normal range of facilities including ATMs, bureaux de change and information desks.

Buffalo Airport transportation

Transfers to the city are quick using the ITA Shuttle. It serves most of the downtown hotels and leaves every hour from 06:30 to 22:00. The NFTA Metro also provides a bus service to Buffalo, Lockport, Niagara Falls and to many other destination points.

Route number 204, the Airport-Downtown Express Metro, offers a convenient method of travel between the airport and downtown Buffalo. In addition, there are also a number of shuttle and taxi services that offer direct transportation to your final destination.
