Buffalo Transport

Although the car is the preferred option for most people living here, Buffalo has a well-organised and efficient public transport system that caters for residents and tourists alike. It reaches most communities in Erie and Niagara counties. The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority's Metro Bus and Rail system operates a number of hubs at which passengers can easily transfer between bus and rail routes.

By bus

Buses run from about 05:00 to 24:00 and there is a standard fare, with an additional charge for each zone crossed. Bus operators do not have change, so make sure you have the exact fare when you board. The routes are designed to create a network, so that by transferring from one to another you can reach your destination. If you are going to transfer, ask the operator on the first bus you ride for a transfer. These transfers are good only until the latest time shown, and never for a round-trip or a stopover. If your trip begins on a train, your ticket serves as a transfer on the first connecting bus.

Every Metro bus stop has a three-coloured sign. To find your closest bus stop, check your schedule. It will tell you which streets your bus travels to. Then look for the bus stop signs along the bus route, located every few blocks. When the bus approaches your stop, signal to the bus operator to stop.

By Metro Rail

Buffalo is the smallest city in the United States to have a subway system. The Metro Rail runs along Main Street from the HSBC Arena to the South Campus of the University of Buffalo, with several stops in between.

The section along Main Street where it runs above ground is free. A ticket must be purchased for the underground sections. Metro Rail features self-service fare collection. That means that there are no turnstiles or ticket agents. However, you must carry proof that you have paid your fare by having a bus transfer, a monthly Metro Pass or a rail ticket.

Taxis

There are several private taxi companies in Buffalo, but it's best to call ahead, since they're hard to find on the street. Your hotel will be able to order you a taxi and supply you with phone numbers for reliable operators.

From the airport

Passengers arriving at the airport requiring ground transportation can choose between buses and taxis. The various shuttle buses provide a quick and convenient connection to the city. Car hire companies are also on hand, and you can book online to ensure a vehicle.
