Be Safe in Boston

Most tourists visiting Boston have an enjoyable experience without any problems regarding health or safety. Petty crime is an issue, though, in and around public transportation centres, and visitors should be cautious about walking alone after dark, particularly around Boston Common or other areas where there are fewer people present at night.

Safety

Boston is a generally safe place to visit, particularly in the areas frequented by tourists. Its still a good idea, however, to take the same precautions you would when visiting any other large American city. Avoid parks (including Boston Common, the Esplanade along the Charles river and the Public Garden) at night unless you're with others. Its also a good idea to not walk alone late at night in the Theatre District, or on the smaller streets leading from North Station. Public transportation serving the areas most popular with tourists is relatively safe, but service stops between 0:30 and 1:00 and pickpockets do operate on buses, trolleys and the subway.

Health

Boston has excellent medical facilities, such as the famous Massachusetts General Hospital, one of Harvard Universitys teaching institutions. It is important to check whether your existing health plan will cover medical costs while abroad, however, as health care costs in the US can be quite high. Non-emergency treatment and prescription medications will have to be paid for when you receive them, while costs for emergency care will often be billed to you. No specific inoculations are required for visiting the US, but it is a good idea to make sure all your vaccinations are up to date.
