Birmingham Weather

Birmingham has a warm, subtropical climate, characterised by lots of rainfall. The summers are hot and the winters mild, with the average year round temperature being 17°C. Most of the severe weather occurs during the spring or autumn months. Occasionally, the region is subject to hurricanes and tropical storms, courtesy of the Gulf coast.

Spring/autumn

The mild weather during the spring and autumn months is quite pleasant, though incoming cold fronts are often accompanied by spurts of severe thunderstorms. March is the wettest month, with the least amount of rain falling in October.

Birmingham sits at the centre of a tornado alley, with occasional tornados springing up during these months. While this sort of severe weather is infrequent and somewhat hit-and-miss, there are occasional instances of strong storms, the most recent having hit in 1977 and again in 1998.

Summer/winter

The summers are hot, with highs in the low 30s (°C) and lows in the 20s (°C). Snowfall during the winter is very infrequent, with only negligible amounts falling during the whole season. The only recent exception is the blizzard of 1993, when Birmingham received more than a foot of snowfall. The weather during the summer and winter months is much more predictable, with very few surprises for visitors.
