Getting to Birmingham

Birmingham is served by one of the best interstate highway networks in the southeastern United States. Interstate 59, I-20, and I-65 all provide access to the region. The Birmingham International Airport sees an annual throughput of three million passengers and offers 160 flights every day to nearly 40 US destinations.

By car

Road access into Birmingham is very straightforward, and the interstate network offers access from all of the major surrounding cities. From Nashville, Tennessee take I-65 South, which continues through Birmingham to Alabama's capital of Montgomery. Interstate 20 runs east-west from Atlanta, Georgia on through Birmingham and then west to Jackson, Louisiana.

From Birmingham, I-59 heads northeast, crossing briefly into Georgia before continuing through Tennessee. Interstate 459 forms a crescent around Birmingham, offering access into the city’s downtown and commercial districts.

By rail

Amtrak's Crescent train connects Birmingham with several destinations in the eastern US including Atlanta, New Orleans, Washington DC, Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York City. By air

Birmingham International Airport is located seven kilometers from downtown Birmingham, and it has convenient road access to the four primary interstates that converge on Birmingham. There are several limousine and shuttle services that offer ground transport into the city. Taxis are on hand, and visitors who wish to hire a car have many firms to choose from. Facilities include ATMs, information kiosks, baggage carts and Skycap Service to assist passengers with checking baggage.

Birmingham International Airport operates a single-terminal facility that is divided into two levels. Flights operate daily to many destinations, both in the US and abroad. Several ATMs and a bureau de change are available. Dining, retail and gift shops can be found on concourses B and C, on both sides of the security checkpoint. The food court is on the upper level. Passengers who need assistance should contact the information desk or make prior arrangements with their airline.

Birmingham airport transportation

Ground transportation from Birmingham Airport is limited to limousines, shuttle buses, taxis and hire cars. The taxi rank is found on the ground level, outside of the Baggage Claim area. Limousines and shuttles operate by reservation only, so arrangements should be made in advance. There are plenty of car hire firms on hand. They populate the ground floor area near Baggage Claim and on Concourse B.
