Birmingham Transport

Getting around Birmingham is easy enough within the downtown areas. Visitors may even wish to explore the north or south sides of the city on foot, though getting from one side to the other on foot is unrealistic. Walking in Birmingham may also be further discouraged by the intense heat in the summer months. Public transportation on city buses is another option within the downtown area.

By bus

There are two bus systems that serve Birmingham: the DART Bus Trolley and the MAX Bus System. On the whole, the public transportation system needs an overhaul. The percentage of Birmingham residents who drive alone to work is well above national averages, and the increasingly intense traffic of rush hour reflects this.

Taxis

Visitors who need to hail a taxi should have no trouble doing so in the downtown areas. Generally speaking, taxis are a very reliable means of getting around Birmingham. Most hotels and restaurants will have agreements with local taxi firms and can assist you in securing a ride. 

From the airport

Upon arriving at the airport, passengers have the option of hailing a taxi, hiring a car or chartering a limousine or shuttle, the latter two being available by reservation-only. The taxi rank is found on the ground level, directly outside of the Baggage Claim area. Rental cars offer a convenient method of getting around, and online booking adds even greater convenience and less hassle at the airport.
