Be Safe in Baltimore

Most visitors to Baltimore enjoy their stay and do not experience safety or health problems. However, the crime rate is high here and there are safety concerns, regarding both petty theft and more violent crime. Tourists should be on the alert while walking around the city, particularly when passing through areas away from the more popular parts of the city, and they should avoid walking alone at night.

Safety

Baltimore is safer than it used to be, but it's still important to be careful in most parts of the city and to avoid walking on the streets alone after dark. Baltimore has the highest murder rate of all cities in the US. Crimes involving drugs are a serious problem, and being away from the main tourist areas late at night can be quite risky. The Inner Harbour and other popular tourist destinations are reasonably safe, although it is important to be alert to petty thieves.

Health

Baltimore has excellent medical facilities such as the famous Johns Hopkins Hospital. Comprehensive medical insurance is important however, as routine consultations and treatment as well as prescription medication must be paid for on-the-spot. No specific inoculations are required for travel to the US, but it is a good idea to make sure you are up-to-date with standard vaccinations including tetanus. Water from the tap is safe to drink, while dining out shouldn’t present any health risks.
