Getting to Austin

Austin Bergstrom International Airport is situated just eight miles from the city and offers connections to over 30 destinations throughout America as well as international connections. The city is also easily accessible by road and rail, with excellent services available from Greyhound buses and the Amtrak train company. Both Amtrak and Greyhound connect Austin with major cities across the country, with the railway running north as far as Chicago.

By car

Austin is situated on several major freeways. Travelling from San Antonio, motorists can head northbound on IH-35 and arrive in Austin within 2 hours, while those arriving from Dallas can travel to the city in 3 hours by driving southbound on IH-35. From Houston, motorists should drive west on US-290. The journey between the two cities takes approximately 3 hours.

By rail

Austin Station is located at 250 North Lamar Boulevard and is served by the Texas Eagle Line, which runs from Chicago in the north to San Antonio in the south. Another rail service is provided by Sunset Limited. This line runs from Los Angeles to Miami, stopping at Austin and many other cities en-route. Local trains are also available from the station to nearby destinations in the Texas Hill Country, west of the city.

By bus

Greyhound Bus Station is situated on IH-35, near Highland Mall. Passengers can reach the station by catching the number 7 bus from downtown to the Greyhound Bus Station. There are several buses a day to other major cities in the region, though schedules can change. Daily departures are available to Dallas, Houston and San Antonio, with journeys taking approximately 4 hours, 3 hours and 1 hour, 30 minutes respectively.

By air

Lying just to the southeast of downtown Austin, Austin Bergstrom International Airport receives a number of international carriers, but is predominantly reserved for domestic flights, with the majority of international flights landing at Houston or Dallas. However, non-stop flights arrive in Austin from all over America including from Washington, Las Vegas, Chicago, Los Angeles and New York. The airport is also well-connected to downtown Austin by shuttle buses and taxis. Journeys to the city centre take approximately 40 minutes by bus and around 20 minutes by taxi.

Austin Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) is situated around eight miles southeast of downtown Austin. The airport is served by major airlines including America West, Continental, Delta, Frontier, Jet Blue, Northwest, Southwest and United Airlines, and features direct services to over 30 destinations across America.

Austin Bergstrom International is a major air transportation hub in the region, connecting the Texan capital to the rest of the country. A single terminal building caters for all arrivals and departures, making it easy to navigate your way around the airport.

The business lounges cater for passengers of certain airlines and are located on the Mezzanine Level, while wireless internet access is now available on all levels of the terminal. Numerous ATM machines are available as well as postal facilities, and there is a good selection of eateries, cafés, bars and shops at the airport.

Austin airport transportation

There is a good range of transfer options from Austin Bergstrom International Airport to downtown Austin and beyond, with taxis, local buses, limousines and shuttle services all vying for your attention. Taxis travel to Austin city centre takimg about 20 minutes, while shuttle services and Metro buses 100 and 350 are available on weekdays, taking around 40 minutes.
